Six stages

The journey of a single piece.

Furniture making is an art in itself, with traditions running deep in communities. From selecting wood with the right properties to the seamless joining of parts into a finished piece, it takes care, planning and a high level of precision at every stage.

  1. 01

    Design

Research, ideation, concept, material, final print

The first, foremost & crucial part of the furniture manufacturing process, as it determines the form, function, and aesthetic appeal of the furniture. The design process at WBM involves several steps such as: Research & Ideation, Concept Development, Material Selection, Final print. When all these are properly followed, comes out the most exquisite Wood B’ Mine design. The designers at WBM work closely with the manufacturing team, architects and retailers, and take into account people’s preferences to create furniture that is functional, safe, and visually appealing while meeting customer expectations and manufacturing requirements.

    Wood Selection

    Hardwoods — mahogany, teak, oak

It is the primary task that depends on the kind of furniture it is intended for. This is the material selection process. For instance, heavy furniture like wooden tables and bedframes require tough, durable materials like hardwoods (mahogany, teak, oak) so that they can endure daily use, support weight, and be waxed and polished to maintain their colour and smooth finish for years.

  3. 03

    Wood Transformation

    Sawn and kiln-dried — 2 to 4 weeks

The cutting of trees into manageable beams or blocks that gets sawn and kiln-dried so that the wood achieves maximum moisture content and doesn’t lose moisture. This transformation process is carried out at the sawmill, and its entirety can take about 2 to 4 weeks.

  4. 04

    Wood Splitting & Cutting

    Sawed, planed, moulded, hand-carved

The kiln-dried wood is then passed further where it is sawed, planed and moulded as required. The different parts are cut out and clamped together and then brought in contact with a high-speed rotating knife that shapes each part to its proper size. The pieces are rough-carved on high-speed knives to be machine sanded, and finished by a hand carver later.

    Veneering

    Tenoning, doweling, dovetailing

A process where thin decorative pieces of wood are bonded onto the original surface for a better appearance, is performed at this stage if required. The veneer itself can also be sanded, stained or painted. This is followed by jointing processes like tenoning, doweling and dovetailing.

    Assembly

    Glue-up, machining, hand sanding, polish

This is the step where the wooden carcasses (basic frameworks) are assembled, drawers are glued up, and doorframes are put together. Once the glue sets in and clamps are applied, the piece is sent to the machine department for machining that could not be performed before assembly. This includes sanding the joints and shaping the edges. Once this is complete, it is returned to the assembly department for the final structuring, wherein the piece is cleaned to remove excess glue. Hand sanding is done where required, followed by staining, spray polishing and treatments if any.
